Inside the Numbers

How much water is being wasted? Over a million gallons in 20 years. In just one zone!

The zone watering weeds has 10 sprinklers.  Each pushing out 3 gallons per minute for 30 min. That's 900 Gallons of water dumped on the weeds per night.  60 nights of watering over a 120 day summer is 54,000 gallons of water.  Times 20 years means 1,080,000 gallons of water has been dumped on the weeds.  No wonder the pond below the weeds is full.

How much money is that over the last 20 years

If we are paying residential rates from the City of Rosemount that would be $3.62 per 1000 gal.  So thats $3,909 for a zone that shouldn't even be on.  Now if we were considered commercial that would be 1.79 per 1000 gal.  or $1,933.  But since the Board decided not to send me the Watering Bill, I'm assuming its the $3,909 amount

Now how about some watering advice from the City of Rosemount

The Evermoor Association is clearly missing on half of these recommendations.

Helpful Conservation Tips

  • DON’T over-water your lawn. Most lawns need about 1” per week to remain healthy and green. (We are 1.5 to 2 inches per week)
  • DON’T collect grass clippings when you mow; the clippings provide shade for the soil and help prevent evaporation.
  • DO comply with the City’s odd-even watering restrictions to help prevent extreme demands on the water system. (We are clearly not complying, check out the new video on Evermoor Parkway getting watered on both sides at the same time.)
  • DO position your sprinklers so the water lands on the lawn or garden, not on paved areas. (Check out the Evermoor Car Wash video)
  • DO let your lawn go dormant during drought conditions; this saves water and time spent mowing.
  • DO choose shrubs or ground cover instead of grass for hard-to-water areas (steep slopes or isolated strips)

You shouldn't be watering more than 1 inch per week

The sprinklers in our zones put down 1.5 to 2 inches per week.  So we are watering 150% to 200% of the recommending amount of water the city suggests.  Which is probably why you see so much runoff down the drains.  Remember there are hundreds of sprinklers in Evermoor.

Imagine if we could cut our water bills in half. The Evermoor budget for watering is over twenty thousand dollars a year.  So according to city recommendations, we are spending between $5,000 and $10,000 a year more than we should.
